IPMA professional guidelines set practical thresholds for safe, respectful, and accountable instruction across classes, private sessions, and institutional training environments.
Instructor-to-client ratios should reflect the complexity of the activity, the experience of participants, the teaching environment, and the equipment in use. A group working on reformer machines or supermodel machines requires adequate sightlines, safe circulation, and enough supervision for timely intervention.
Guidance addresses pre-session communication, informed participation, equipment checks, touch policy, incident documentation, and appropriate referral. Instructors must work within their training and should not present movement instruction as diagnosis or treatment.
Studios should use the guidance to train staff, document operating procedures, and review their practice after incidents, complaints, or material changes to a facility.
